This story takes place in 1859, during the Rancho Period in California history (after the Mexican-American War). Maxine McKain is wagered in a bet by her father -- and loses to Dane del Cordobes, a wealthy Spaniard on his way home to his ranch in San Diego. Dane insists that Maxine become his indentured servant to pay off the debt. Dane is a handsome Spanish aristocrat betrothed to his brother's widow.

The story is unique and the McKain family is one-of-a-kind. The twins (Max and Maxine) were dropped off by their mother while they were toddlers to the foot-free Dicey. He has tried to be a good father but really didn't have much material to work with (as far as being a father goes). Max is retarded and Maxine is the real head of the family. Sharon Ihle is a great author and I've been trying to find all of her books to read.
