A 20 year old Amish woman Bess is sad and very depressed when her Husband Caleb dies. She is also 8 months in the family way. But she does not want a boppli without her Mann. She has a long, painful labor and there is no happiness when Joshua is born without his Daed. Plus Joshua is not a gut baby.He does not sleep at night.Cries all the time to nurse and spits it up nasty and stinking sour. Not to mention changing stinky, poopy and wet diapers 12 times day and washing them out by hand. Then all his stinking clothes and hers to wash. Why did God give cranky, stinky boppli without her Mann? Will she ever love again? Why did not she die with her Mann and leave his family with the boppli?
