Joshua Carter is an undercover agent who has built up a James Bond-like persona as part of his cover - the suave, sophisticated playboy. This is why shy, "plain" secretary Amanda Wainwright can't believe that he's serious about wanting her. Besides, she believes in love and marriage, while his past has made him gun-shy of both. In the midst of the danger they face because of Joshua's undercover work, they learn to accept each other.
Although it does have some element of external conflict, mainly to do with Joshua's occupation, much of the book is focused on the relationship of the hero and heroine, their emotions, their fears and their desires.
