I have read this book many times over the years; I think it's the strongest in the Four Horseman trilogy, chiefly because every time I read it, I get angry all over again at the hero, Rex, and his awful condescending attitude toward women in the beginning of the book. Selfish, self-centered, arrogant -- he expects every woman to fall at his feet if he so much as crooks his little finger. I enjoy his anger and dismay when he meets Catherine, who ought to be "fair game" by his rules but won't immediately fall backwards for him. Catherine has her own story and her own reasons for living as she does, and as Rex gradually comes to be curious about her as a person and to learn her background, it's amazing to see his growth as a human being.
