The War Between the States is over, and the people of Waterville, Maine, want nothing more than to rebuild their lives - but they find all too quickly that in the wake of war, life and love move in unpredictable ways.

Frederic returns from the battlefields to find that his fiancee' has married another man. Already damaged by ihs battle experience, Frederic struggles to find his way and make sense of growing feelings for one who is much too young for him.

Now that the war is over, Emily and Robert finally have the time to love, or so Emily believes. Then Robert takes a ministry position out of state, one that wil force them to live apart. Embittered, Emily throws herself into her own pursuits; but where will they lead her heart?

Louisa looks forwards to a new life with Peter, her fiancee', until he mysteriously disappears. Her anger and confustion drivers her into the arms of another man. Peter is mired in problems Louisa knows nothing about. Will he have the courage to return? If he does, will it be too late?

Will those who are left behind succumb to bitterness, or can they open their hearts to God's healing and learn to love again?
