Sir Phillip was married to Marina for eight years; Marina remained depressed throughout their marriage. They had a pair of twins and then Marina became more depressed. After Marina died, Eloise Bridgerton, a distant cousin of Phillip's wife, sent him a condolence letter. That began a year-long correspondence between the two. Finally, Phillip wrote asking Eloise to visit him to see if they would suit in marriage.

Eloise runs away from a family party and takes a carriage to Phillip's home, some great distance away. When she got there, Eloise found out that Phillip had two children, which he had not mentioned in his letters. Although she was a member of the ton, she did not comment or leave his home when Eloise did not find a chaperone there. She had to know that she was breaking the rules.

The best time in the book came when Eloise's four brothers came to find out what she was up to and take her home. The comedy was delightful.

Phillip was a disappointment; I can understand his problems. He seemed powerless to help Marina and the twins became hellions because of his inattention. However, Phillip always took the easy way out; he rushed out to work in his botany pursuits in the greenhouse instead of trying to deal with his children.

I haven't read any of the other Bridgerton books and doubt I will try them, although I have read other reviews that the older brothers' stories were better than this book.
