Cloverdale Elementary Gets Book Donation From Online Book Club

Dothan Eagle (Newspaper) - 12/11/2009 by Jim Cook
Christmas came early for Cloverdale Elementary School, thanks to a book swap Web site.

Paperbackswap.com recently donated 500 paperback books to the school library, books that will come in handy because the school’s library funding has been cut due to state budget reductions.

Carla Tew, school librarian, said the books will be distributed among the library and individual classrooms. Tew said the books are welcome additions for many first-year teachers who don’t have many supplemental materials yet.

Paperbackswap.com is a Web site that allows members to swap books with other readers all over the country. For every book a member submits, he or she gets a credit. Recently readers donated some of their credits to a program designed to help supply schools in need of extra support with books.

“We want to do our part by furthering our love of reading among the students and provide better opportunities for them to learn and grow,” said Richard Pickering, Paperbackswap.com president.

Amy Braswell, a Cloverdale teacher and member of the online book club, submitted Cloverdale’s name as a possible recipient. Shortly afterward, the school was informed it was getting a shipment of books.

“The turnaround was amazing, I’ve never seen something that had so little red tape,” Tew said.

Aneta Walker, Cloverdale Elementary School principal, said the book donation was appreciated, especially in a time of deep budget cuts such as now.

“It’s nice to have a business that wants to help needy children,” she said.
