Help Center - How to post a book

Search Terms:

Posting a book means listing a book on your account to offer to the club members. It is very easy to Post a book onto your account Bookshelf ! You just have to be sure that the book meets site criteria for book condition, and that you use a listing that matches the book you have in hand.

Before you Post:

  • Please make sure to post only books that you are ready to part with. Posting a book that you are not prepared to send when it is requested creates a false sense of expectation in the member who requests the book.
  • Your books must meet PBS criteria for book condition.
  • If your book is in MP3 audio format,  you need to make sure the TITLE on the listing says "MP3 Audio". See more about this below.

To post your book:

if the book is one you received from the club, you can post from the Bookshelf or TBR Pile as described here

  • First, go to the Post Books page

    • From anywhere on the site:

      • Place your cursor over My Account in the toolbar at the top of the page
      • Click Post Books in the menu that drops down
    • From My Account:
      • Click the Post Books tab
    • From My Bookshelf:
      • Click the link "Post Books" at the top left, in the yellow bar
  •  On the Post Books page

  • Enter the ISBN

    • You can find the ISBN printed in the front pages of the book. Some books also have the ISBN printed on the jacket.
    • Either the 13-digit OR the 10-digit ISBN will work.
    • If you cannot find an ISBN on your book:
      • Click the link "Post a Book Without an ISBN" at the top of the Post Books page, and enter the information about your book.
      • You must not use an ISBN listing to post a book that does not have an ISBN printed on it.
  • The ISBN field will turn green and the Book Listing Preview will come up to the right.

    • If the field does not turn green, the ISBN is not recognized by the PBS database, and you will have to enter this book as a non-ISBN item (see just above)
  • Look at the Book Listing Preview carefully, to confirm that your book matches the information there (ISBN, title, author and booktype must all match). Note: the cover image on the listing does not have to match the book.

    •
  •
    • You will see the text above the Book Listing Preview:

This is how your book listing will appear in the PBS library.

Do the Title, Author, ISBN and Book Type match your book EXACTLY?

Please note: book cover image shown does NOT need to match your book.

    • If all of the information (ISBN, title, author, booktype) on the Book Listing Preview matches your book EXACTLY click  .   Do not click Refresh on your browser while the button reads "Processing..."  Doing that may cause the book to be Posted twice.

  • If your book does NOT match the information in the Book Listing Preview:

    • If it is a minor difference, such as a misspelled title or the wrong author first name, or a missing author, you can post the book and submit corrections afterward using the Edit Book Data link on the Book Details page.
      • If the title on the listing does NOT include "(MP3 Audio)",  you need to make this edit to the liting before posting the item as available. [Not all members can play MP3 Audio Books with their audio players.] So: if you want to Post an MP3 Audio, you must FIRST edit the lsting title to include "(MP3 Audio)" after the title:
        • You can submit this edit by going to the Book Details page for the book (an ISBN search will take you there), and choose the Edit Book Data option from the More Options menu. Submit the edit and wait for approval (this can take a few days).
        • Once the title change has been approved, you can use the listing to post your MP3 Audio book, following the instructions on this page.

Once you have posted the book, you should check over the listing for missing information -- such as number of pages (particularly important if the item has fewer than 50 pages) or publication date (important if the item is a textbook), or "Large Print" (if a book is large print but the listing does not say that).

  • You can provide missing information using the Edit Book Data link in the More Options menu on the Book Details page

  • PaperBackSwap Data Correction Approval volunteers will Review the submission, investigate the changes if needed, and approve them (if they deny the changes they will generally let you know, and/or ask for more information).

Other ways to post books:

To post from the Bookshelf:

Books you receive go onto your Bookshelf on Hold. To post those books when you are ready to swap them:

  • Check the box on the far RIGHT of the book in the list on your Bookshelf, then
  • Click "Post" at the top of the Bookshelf page. You will be shown the listing preview -- ensure that the book information matches the book in hand before clicking the "post" button to use that listing.

To post from the TBR Pile:

Books you receive go onto your TBR Pile. To post those books when you are ready to swap them:

  • Check the box on the far LEFT of the book in the list on your TBR Pile, then
  • Click "Post" at the top of the page. You will be shown the listing preview and you should ensure that the book information matches the book in hand before clicking the "post" button.

To Post a Book Without an ISBN:

  • Click the link "Post a Book Without an ISBN" at the top of the Post Books page.
  • You can also click the "create a custom listing" link above the book listing preview

To Post multiple books:

  • Click the "Post Multiple Books" link at the top of the Post Books page
  • Enter your ISBNs
  • All valid/recognized ISBNs will turn green in the list
    • Any ISBNs in boxes that do NOT turn green are not recognized by the PBS database.
      • an ISBN that is not recognized by the database does not have  a pre-written listing to use to post it.
      • You will need to create a listing for an unrecognized ISBN using the Post a Book Without an ISBN feature.
    • First, check the unrecognized ISBNs for accuracy--correct any typos.
    • If they are still unrecognized, remove them from the list and post those books separately using the Post a Book Without an ISBN link at the top of the Post Books page (in the yellow bar).
  • On the next page, scroll down to verify that the book information on each listing (ISBN, author, title and booktype) is accurate and matches your book (all FOUR aspects must match)
    • Click "Don't list book" for any book listing that is inaccurate; these books will need to be posted with a listing you create yourself, if the listing in the database for that ISBN does not match your book
      • Again, you will need to post such books as if they do not have ISBNs, using the Post a Book without an ISBN feature
  • For all the listings shown that are accurate (match your book's ISBN, author, title and booktype), you can  leave the default choice "List book" and click Continue at the bottom of the page.

To Post a File of ISBNs:

  • Click the "Post a File of ISBNs" link at the top of the Post Books page
  • Import your file of ISBNs
  • Acceptable file formats: plain text, HTML, CSV.
    • ISBNs do not have to be on separate lines in the file.  They also do not have to be separated by commas, but they do need to be separated by at least one space between ISBNs.
  • Of course, when importing a file of ISBNs to your Bookshelf, you do need to be sure that the listings match the books you have - the best way to do this is first to post the file, then sort your Bookshelf by Date Posted > DESC and look at all of the listings that just posted, to be sure the author and title *and booktype* on each one are correct.
