Lowrey has approximately 162 students in pre-k through 8 grades with higher enrollment in pre-k through 5 that consist of roughly 82% minority and 77% low income.
Although Lowrey has a library, there is no funding for a full time librarian so the teachers take on this role for their classes with one part time teacher/librarian and classroom books. Lowrey is a close knit School widely supported by the people of our small farming community. According to the Tahlequah Daily Press this week:
A recent report from the Rural School and Community Trust ranks Oklahoma's rural schools as the ninth state in greatest need of assistance. According to the report, Oklahoma spends less than $4,400 per rural student.
"With half of Oklahoma's public schools in rural areas, it is crucial to supply teachers and classrooms with the tools to improve learning opportunities," said Nancy B. Anthony, Oklahoma City Community Foundation president.
Lowrey like other schools in the states are certainly feeling the effects of record budget cuts. We should not let this effect our children's learning and want the best for our kids so they do not fall behind simply because money is harder to come by. Early readers, exposure to audio books and periodicals as well as picture books at young ages are crucial for our kids as a building block for their future. Reading is essential to master for any later area of educational concentration. I myself am a mother of 4 ages 6, 4, 3, and 3 who will all attend our small school. I began volunteering as a grant writer in my free time to help bridge the financial gaps of the school as much as possible. Books are very important for our children to grow and learn every subject.
