Dunedin Elementary School is located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population at DES is diverse with the majority of the approximately 600 students identifying as Hispanic. There are also a significant number of students identified as Pacific Islander and African American. A prominent number of students have Limited English Proficiency and require extra support.
The challenges the students of Dunedin Elementary face are numerous. Approximately 80% of the students at DES qualify for free or reduced lunch and the school has Title 1 status. DES has the largest percentage of homeless students in the county. This year, the school was identified as an L300 school indicating that the reading scores placed the school in the bottom 300 schools in reading. The focus on reading is being intensified this school year including an extra 30 minutes added to the school day for reading instruction.
Despite the challenges, Dunedin Elementary School provides a positive, safe, nurturing environment for students to learn and grow. The staff’s dedication could not be greater.
Hurricane Irma swept through our area on September 17th, and DES was opened as a shelter. A total of 1100 people sought safety from the Hurricane at DES. When the staff and students returned to school after 11 days away, everyone was overjoyed to be safe and back in a learning environment.
Thank you for your consideration for Dunedin Elemetary for the Books for Schools Donation Program this year!
