This is a very entertaining read. Some information is hard to believe, but for a funny trip using escape as a vehicle, I would highly recommend this!

This book should be on the reading list of junior high school students everywhere! A great American adventure story, I consumed it in 1 day. A young woman feels the call of a completely different lifestyle then how she's lived and takes the plunge into rural living and raising a wild puppy. I believe this will eventually become one of those classic American works.

Pete remembers his father coming home miserable from work every day. He grew up poor, and instead of this being a motivator to work hard, it has the opposite effect, he vows to work as little as possible. Only towards the end does he conclude that he's wasted years of his life instead of working towards a career. In between these two life realizations are the intriguing stories of Pete working menial jobs everywhere. Most of us want to work hard, and it was fascinating to read about such a dedicated slacker!

I tried to read this to my husband but was laughing so hard I didn't get past one sentence! For anyone who appreciates the "grumpy old man" type, I can't recommend this enough! I want to meet the senior Mr. Halpern, I think he should go on tour. I would camp out overnight for the best seats!

I'd first heard of this book at a museum exhibit about the Reys. This book was commissioned by the American government after WW2 to be translated in German and distributed in Germany as part of the de-nazification of German children.
Spotty looks different then the rest of his family and this is a story about him looking for acceptance and community. This story is universal and can be applied to an endless number of situations, both for children/adults who are different and others who are confronted by someone not like themselves. This should be on every child's bookshelf.
