This is a very fast read. I think I was done in less than 6 or 7 hours. It is fast paced, and is a fun look behind the scenes at a casino. If you are planning a trip to a casino, you should read this; not because it will help you "bring down the house", it won't, but I found myself looking around the casino I went to with a much more knowing eye than I would have had if I had not read the book. The downside, the characters are mostly college age kids, who aren't really very interesting. I have since read the book written by the group's much older mentor, and it is a better book about the same events.
The bottom line, if you like light, escapist heist type books, you will like this one.

Okay, I have to admit, I read this as a kid, because I had such a HUGE crush on Sam Neill, and he was in the TV miniseries based on this. It does seem dated now, a bloodless, bombless coup leaves the US at the mercy of the Ruskies, but it is still a good, enjoyable read. The characters are well rounded and you find that you do care what happens to them, and that keeps you turning the pages. If you like political novels that have the scent of days gone by (ahhh...nostalga) you will like this one.

What a great book! An intricate plot, stuffed with art references, biblical references, architecture and papal inside information, you really can't go wrong here. Intelligently written and super fast paced, I couldn't put this one down until I was finished with because I had to know how it all turned out. Enjoyable book for anyone about 16 years and up.

The first book I have ever read with a warning on the very first page. The warning tells the reader that these are very depressing stories and should not be read all at once. Wow. The stories themselves are dark, depressing, and wonderful. Some feel a bit dated, this was written in 1974, but what I was most surprised by is how prescient the author was about the future. The story I like most is "Knox," a tale about a woman with an extraordinary gift, who desperately wants to get rid of it, and those around her are all to willing to take it from her.

Good characterization keeps you turning the pages but a melodramatic, cliched ending keeps the book from having much impact. I really like the 1st half of this book, the 2nd half, not so much.
