Nowhere near as good as "In The Company of S. H. Most stories would not stand alone without the "echo" to boost them. Most writers did not seem very familiar with Sherlock, and those that did were rather uninspired.
Worth reading, but not great

Good writer and story. However, unnecessary gruesome detail, e. g., "Your baby has jaundice and must see a doctor." "Just be one less mouth ter feed (from mother). Another young mother is carrying a dead baby in her arms. And (spoiler alert!) of course the little match girl dies because "she was too stupid to get a warm blanket to cover 'er".
Would have been a 4 or 5, if not for the indirect social commentary

Second book starring Wiggins, the leader of Sherlock's Irregulars, but all grown up. I read "the irregular", the first book in the series. This time., Wiggins becomes more of a drunken thug than an illiterate searcher after truth and justice.
The book is too "busy", with suffragettes, German spies, an embassy that is actually a bordello, protected by a maxim machine gun in the middle of London, socialist protests about the exploitation of the poor, and much more.
Wiggins pulls some of the tricks that Holmes taught him, but mostly looks for another pub for a beer and a punch up.
It is left dangling to make you read the next volume, but I will not.
