This is one of the best books I've ever read, and I honestly have NO idea what the earlier reviewer was referring to as far a raw sexual material? Sex was referred to, but there's nothing graphic or raunchy here. Violence, yes, I guess a few people are murdered, but again, it's not graphic or brutally described. I loved every word of this book (and her others, too, Shipping News and Postcards) and am just starting That Old Ace in the Hole.

I, too, started this book about three times before I actually continued reading it through to the end. Not sure why I couldn't get started with it, but once I did, I loved it SO much. I think the writing is beautiful, and the ending, for me, while unexpected and sad, was very appropriate, and not a let-down at all.

This was SUCH a lovely book, I couldn't put it down. It took me several tries to get started with it, not sure why, but I'm very glad I kept up with it. And if you love this one, also read his THIRTEEN MOONS, it was wonderful also. I've not seen the movie, but do want to now.

I just read a review on Amazon that this particular version (an Amazon release?) it NOT complete. It says it is missing the poetry and that the formatting is very poor. DO read Dr. Zhivago, definitely DO, just not this one.

I don't know what to say about this book because I didn't actually read it. I read about 20 pages, the writing was boring at best, compared to what I usually read, and I just couldn't get interested in the story at all. I used to feel obligated to finish a book, but no more. Life is too short and here are way better things to read. So, off it goes to someone else. Disappointed, I'd waited a long time for this one.

Seriously, I thought the writing was pretty nice at times, but what a ridiculous story. Can't think of any more to say about it, I thought it was nothing more than ridiculous.

I love Joseph Cornell, so I kind of bought this as just a 'fan' response, but it's a little too gimmicky for me. It's a make-your-own, just-like-Joseph's assemblage box kind of thing, so I kind of wish I hadn't spent the money on it. So, I've put it up for sale on Half.com and I hope someone else will like it!

I can't even begin to describe what this book is about, so just let me say that this is the most magnificent book I have ever read. I have read it three times now, and have loved it more every time. Unbelievable. I would give it a hundred stars if I could.

This book FEELS magical, because it IS magical. I read it slowly and savored every word. This is a masterpiece, I want to give a copy to every reader I know.

I'm sorry, but this book was BOR-ING to me. After having read such authors as Annie Proulx and Barbara Kingsolver, with their unbelievable, poetic descriptions full of minute detail, I just couldn't get into this one. If I'd persevered, maybe I could have enjoyed the story, but I just couldn't. Get a copy of Proulx's Accordion Crimes, or Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible or Prodigal Summer instead.

I loved most of this book, as usual. I love all of Louise Erdrich's books. Probably the last quarter I didn't enjoy as much. The part dealing with Evelina at the mental hospital didn't seem to belong there, was completely unnecessary, and then once that was over, all of the explanation about what happened regarding the murder years ago, it was way too quick and not up to her usual literary style. The book should have been longer, not so fast to explain everything at the end.

Sheesh, I ready such good things about this, and I think people like this author Mary Sullivan, but I thought the writing was so bad, I didn't keep reading it beyond the first ten pages. It's on my bookshelf and ready so mail.

This book is titled The Taste of Sorrow, which is already available in hardcover, but not yet in paperback. Not sure how to get this corrected?

This is one of the most magical, lovely books I have ever read. I never wanted it to end. Helprin's writing, his words, left me breathless.
