Belvedere's antics and comedic routines are a riot: whoever heard of a dog marketing dog biscuits shaped like mailman's ankles? Or a dog who invents bananas complete with zippers? Or a dog who gets upset when his candlelight doggie dinner is missing its after-supper brandy? Or a dog who sets an old lady's hat on fire just to get attention?

That's Belvedere for you! He golfs, practices yoga, hypnotism, magic and voodoo, fishes, goes camping, plays darts, vacuums and more. He's Marmaduke, Snoopy, Garfield, and Fred the Bassett Hound all rolled into one! He's one laugh right after another, guaranteed to give you a chuckle ~

I understand that other books P. L Gaus has written are supposed to be riveting - but this is not one. I found this book extremely hard to slog through, and that's an understatement. I couldn't recommend this book to my own worst enemy.

The story has so many flaws I wouldn't know where to begin enumerating them. The characters are so poorly developed you couldn't care less who the murderer is and whether or not he or she is brought to justice. Three-quarters of the book is filler, with long, drawn-out conversations that don't add anything, with folks putting on and taking off their coats ad nauseum, and with the weather and snow outside being mentioned to the point of monotony. Even minute descriptions of coffee cups don't escape this author's keen eye! Nothing is learned about the Amish or their way of life. It is never explained how, if the victim was long dead BEFORE she got bashed in the head, where all the blood that was on Martha's apron came from. The professor is told to stop investigating the murder but he keeps on doing it anyway and the sheriff, who casually goes away to Chicago (with the coroner, no less, but then again, EVERYONE knows EVERYONE intimately in this town, especially the murder victim, who slept with just about EVERY male in the book), has the mystery solved for him in his absence -- and by the professor no less! How tidy. The author adds pieces of one person's past here, and then starts up a romance there, and then brings in more useless filler to where you're left wondering why you even started reading this sad waste-of-a-tree in the first place. And if I could add a note to the author I'd like him to know that people don't talk like this:

"Hi Dick!"
"How are you, Mike?"
"I'm good, Dick. What's new?"
"Nothing much, Mike. How about you?"
"Oh, my dog's sick, Dick."
"Sorry to hear that, Mike."
"Yeah, Dick, but he'll pull through."
"Gee, Mike, that's good to hear."
"Yeah, Dick, he's a trooper."
"Yeah, old Fido's a trooper, Mike."
"Say, Dick, how's your wife?"
"I don't know, Mike, I've been too busy with the dog."
"Well, have a good day, Dick."
"You, too, Mike. Say hi to your wife, Mike. Goodbye, Mike."

(These are my words, but you get the gist).

It's so obvious all the rave reviews about this piece of trash on Amazon are by the author's friends. Do yourself a favor and read James Patterson. In comparison to Gaus, Patterson's pulp fiction books seem like Pulitzer Prize winners.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this book a "9." It's full of intrigue, excitement and violence, and while its theme is somewhat sci-fi-ish (and not medical thriller-genre like most of Cook's books), it is a good story nonetheless.

Few serious American playwrights have captured the imagination of the theater public all over the world as has Arthur Miller with DEATH OF A SALESMAN and THE CRUCIBLE. Mr. Miller's plays are rooted in a realistically critical view of American life and propelled by the intense personal conviction of a man who cares what he writes about and writes about something that matters. In THE CRUCIBLE he turns for his setting to the grim days of the Salem witch trials, and brings into urgently brilliant focus an issue that still weighs heavily the progress of American civilization - the problem of guilt by association.

An extremely interesting book that is "written" (not by the author, but also by the main character) by Christopher, an autistic boy. Christopher sets out to find who killed his neighbor's dog, and this quest ends up taking him on a journey that requires much bravery on his part. A highly recommended read!

FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON made its first appearance in print as a short story which was rapidly and widely anthologized, and translated internationally. It received further acclaim as a memorable television drama, and was rapidly purchased for film/motion picture production. Then, enlarged and richly peopled, Daniel Keyes' haunting story became an award-winning novel - recipient of the Nebula Award for the Best Novel of the Year by the Science Fiction Writers of America.

This fascinating tale of a daring human experiment has been described as "a love triangle between two people," "a suspenseful, gripping story," and "a brilliant fantasy." It is all these things. It is one of the most strikingly original and engrossing novels of our time! Now, full-bodied and richly-peopled, FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON is the daring novel of a startling human experiment!

Generous-hearted, smartly comic, and wickedly insightful, "The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing" maps the progress of Jane Rosenal as she sets out on a personal and spirited expedition through the perilous terrain of sex, love, relationships, and the treacherous waters of the workplace. What is love, she wonders, as she scrutinizes the wiles and ways of older, possibly wiser women; casts a questioning eye toward various species of couples; and holds out her wrists for a spritz of perfume from her beautiful boss. . . . How do you find it (and keep it) - and above all, who makes the rules?

THE PRECARIOUS ROUTE TO A NEW WORLD

Between 1891 and the early 1930s nearly fifteen million people streamed through Ellis Island. Some came hoping to find the streets paved with gold; others expected to find savage natives waiting on the shores. All of them wanted a better, safer life than the one they had left behind.

Now, the poignant hopes, the deepest fears, and the incredible bravery of these immigrants, come to life as the men and women who made the journey recall their decisions to leave home, the treacherous trip across the Atlantic in windowless cargo holds, the often heartless encounters with bureaucracy on Ellis Island - and the first tastes of a strange and promising new world.

Sparkling with humor, irony, and nostalgia, these stories provide a unique personal look at a great historical phenomenon.

Since its publication in 1847 "Jane Eyre" has never ceased to be one of the most widely read of English novels. Transmuted by the rare Bronte imagination, the romance of Jane and Rochester takes on a strange and unforgettable atmosphere that lifts it above the level of mere melodrama. But Charlotte Bronte intended more. She portrayed the refusal of a spirited and intelligent woman to accept her appointed place in society with unusual frankness and with a passionate sense of the dignity and needs of her sex. Q. D. Leavis's introduction brings out the revolutionary qualities of the book and its author's creation of something that would 'be true to the experience of the whole woman and...convey a sense of life's springs and undercurrents.'

Jazz Is
Jazz Is

Review Date: 7/13/2006

A note from the author:

I am delighted that JAZZ IS will continue to live in this Limelight Edition because, of all the books on jazz I've worked on, this one has brought the most personal responses. In the mail, on the street, in jazz clubs.

What I wanted to do was tell something of who these musicians were and are - the lives that became their music. I wanted to remove the barriers to enjoyment of the music that some people seem to have when they think about jazz, before they really hear it. I mean their sense that the music is too "difficult" or "complex" for a non-musician. I had heard this for years, and my usual response was: "Just listen. Just listen to the feeling. Listen to the stories each of them is telling, the stories about their lives."

Then I figured that if I could write a book about some of those lives, some of those powerful emotions, readers would see that they don't have to know anything about chords or time signatures to feel Billie Holiday or Charles Mingus speaking directly to them of the memories and desires that link us all.

And a good many folks have told me that they discovered, partly because of this book, that there is more of themselves, of their own lives, in jazz than they had expected. And others, long since on intimate terms with jazz, said they found here a convivial way of renewing their first loves.

For myself, this is certainly my most personal book on the music, and I hope it may now bring more of you into the deep song of jazz.

A wonderful story about a young boy named Sam who runs away from home - to live in the forest. He becomes entirely self-sufficient, living on mussels, acorns, berries, frogs' legs, hickory nuts, wild onions (ramps), fish, venison, etc. and even learns how to make salt and flour from the same. He builds himself an ingenious shelter, a fireplace, clay "jars," utensils, musical instruments, fishing gear, and even sews new clothing when his old clothes start falling apart. He tames a falcon, and this falcon becomes his closest and necessary companion. All in all, this is truly a remarkable and eye-opening tale of survival, courage, determination, gladness, appreciation and renewed love for all of God's creation, big and small.

"Beautifully sensuous, "Summer" is named for that never-to-be-repeated period when sexual love seems to be 'everything'...[when] there can be only one first romance - one beginning, one sexual initiation with its exhilarating illusion of unending ecstasy and unlimited opportunity...
