I understand that other books P. L Gaus has written are supposed to be riveting - but this is not one. I found this book extremely hard to slog through, and that's an understatement. I couldn't recommend this book to my own worst enemy.
The story has so many flaws I wouldn't know where to begin enumerating them. The characters are so poorly developed you couldn't care less who the murderer is and whether or not he or she is brought to justice. Three-quarters of the book is filler, with long, drawn-out conversations that don't add anything, with folks putting on and taking off their coats ad nauseum, and with the weather and snow outside being mentioned to the point of monotony. Even minute descriptions of coffee cups don't escape this author's keen eye! Nothing is learned about the Amish or their way of life. It is never explained how, if the victim was long dead BEFORE she got bashed in the head, where all the blood that was on Martha's apron came from. The professor is told to stop investigating the murder but he keeps on doing it anyway and the sheriff, who casually goes away to Chicago (with the coroner, no less, but then again, EVERYONE knows EVERYONE intimately in this town, especially the murder victim, who slept with just about EVERY male in the book), has the mystery solved for him in his absence -- and by the professor no less! How tidy. The author adds pieces of one person's past here, and then starts up a romance there, and then brings in more useless filler to where you're left wondering why you even started reading this sad waste-of-a-tree in the first place. And if I could add a note to the author I'd like him to know that people don't talk like this:

It's so obvious all the rave reviews about this piece of trash on Amazon are by the author's friends. Do yourself a favor and read James Patterson. In comparison to Gaus, Patterson's pulp fiction books seem like Pulitzer Prize winners.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this book a "9." It's full of intrigue, excitement and violence, and while its theme is somewhat sci-fi-ish (and not medical thriller-genre like most of Cook's books), it is a good story nonetheless.

An extremely interesting book that is "written" (not by the author, but also by the main character) by Christopher, an autistic boy. Christopher sets out to find who killed his neighbor's dog, and this quest ends up taking him on a journey that requires much bravery on his part. A highly recommended read!

What I wanted to do was tell something of who these musicians were and are - the lives that became their music. I wanted to remove the barriers to enjoyment of the music that some people seem to have when they think about jazz, before they really hear it. I mean their sense that the music is too "difficult" or "complex" for a non-musician. I had heard this for years, and my usual response was: "Just listen. Just listen to the feeling. Listen to the stories each of them is telling, the stories about their lives."
Then I figured that if I could write a book about some of those lives, some of those powerful emotions, readers would see that they don't have to know anything about chords or time signatures to feel Billie Holiday or Charles Mingus speaking directly to them of the memories and desires that link us all.
And a good many folks have told me that they discovered, partly because of this book, that there is more of themselves, of their own lives, in jazz than they had expected. And others, long since on intimate terms with jazz, said they found here a convivial way of renewing their first loves.
For myself, this is certainly my most personal book on the music, and I hope it may now bring more of you into the deep song of jazz.

A wonderful story about a young boy named Sam who runs away from home - to live in the forest. He becomes entirely self-sufficient, living on mussels, acorns, berries, frogs' legs, hickory nuts, wild onions (ramps), fish, venison, etc. and even learns how to make salt and flour from the same. He builds himself an ingenious shelter, a fireplace, clay "jars," utensils, musical instruments, fishing gear, and even sews new clothing when his old clothes start falling apart. He tames a falcon, and this falcon becomes his closest and necessary companion. All in all, this is truly a remarkable and eye-opening tale of survival, courage, determination, gladness, appreciation and renewed love for all of God's creation, big and small.
