This book was not at all what I expected. The only prior knowledge I had of it was previews from the movie, which made it look like a love story. While it is that, that is a very small part of it. The young man's journey home from a devastating war, brings him in contact with the people of the mountains who are fighting their own war of grief and poverty. The woman who waits for him, and her friend, use their resoursefulness to help others. This is a beautiful story of people living in a devastating time.

This book is a very detailed account of the few days leading up to the trip to Dallas, the assassination, the aftermath of confusion (lost phone connections) the funeral and the transferring of power. It is very well written. Manchester gives a very good window into what the transfer of power from Kennedy to Johnson looked like; not just the actual transfer, but the emotional and political transfer. It was such an unusual situation because of the trauma and confusion. Although he gets a little carried away in the detail department, ie: who was guarding whom, it is such a good revelation of the country in crisis, especially looking back now after 911. Very interesting historically.

I had not read anything by this author before, and this was not his #1, but it sounded intriguing. It was. Its a bit different in the plot line. It ends up having 3 different parts. It took me awhile to figure out why that was happening, but once I did I loved it. The writing is beautiful. Its about one mans journey and memories, and how those sustain each other.

The Fasting Edge: Recover your passion. Reclaim your purpose. Restore your joy.
Review Date: 4/10/2023

THe word fasting has always caused anxiety in me. Jentezen gives very practical, physical and spiritual reasons for fasting. I want to learn this discipline in order to hear God more clearly. He gave me some good tools for doing so, and helped me get over some of the hand ups I had about fasting.
He also gave many 'fasting' options. I recommend this book to anyone who has had questions concerning fasting.

Why Men Earn More: The Startling Truth Behind the Pay Gap -- and What Women Can Do About It
Review Date: 8/1/2012

This is a very interesting book. Not what I expected. Farrell explains why men earn more. He takes into account their education/job/lifestyle choices and how that plays into it. It debunks the idea that one on one, job for job, men are paid more. He breaks it down pretty well and gives a really good overall view. Their is much food for thought in this. You can tell by his writing/research/previous titles that he is well informed. Good read.
