This is the story telepathic cousins, Jeremy and Helene, and how they end up traversing the Universe to Earth's sister planet, Terra, where telepathy and ESP are the norm but television and plastics are an unknown science. Helene is unwittingly "grabbed" through space with Charlie, Jeremy's pet cat and replaced by a "doppelganger" on Earth. When Jeremy goes in search of his cat he discovers the truth and is then sent across space to meet an uncertain fate. Especially since the evil force they are facing on Terra is Terra's version of Jeremy's father. Do Jeremy, Helene and Charlie make it back to Earth or are they stranded on Terra forever, forced to the bidding of a power hungry Doctor? You'll have to read the story to find out.

This story was published in 1970 and yet is still an engaging, quick paced read. I bought this book from the Weekly Reader Club in the '70's but just now have read it so I could write the review. If I had read it when I was 12 I know I would have really liked it. At the age I am now I still enjoyed all of the twists and turns, wondering how it was going to end up. I think this story is for readers aged 9-12.

The book starts out great but the second half quickly turns into stereotypes and disappointment. I don't think the ending ties in to the promise of change in the beginning and I wish the author had gone a different route with the story. Yes, things are hard but there are people who do overcome in spite of the odds. It doesn't have to be a "feel good" tale but ditching the stereotypes would have been a step in the right direction to educating people about the broad prison population and how many do succeed at never going back to the same old mistakes and behaviors.
