Powerful! If you were moved by The Help then you definitely need to read Billy. This may have to be added to my 'keeper' shelf.

Young & black in 1937 Mississippi, Billy Lee makes a fateful move in defending himself against an older teenage white girl... fatal for her & in the end for him as well.

Reading this is not for the faint of heart & hearing Billy call out for his mama at the end of the book will bring you to tears.

The part of the book that was Hannah's story I found to be very interesting. However, there is a large portion of the book that deals with Mr. Gates acquisition of Hannah's manuscript & it's provenance... 175+ pages! I got bored with all that & skipped ahead to Hannah's story, which was quite good.

If you are interested in the history of the manuscript & it's verification of authenticity, etc. then you'll enjoy that part much more than I did. I just wanted to get on with the story.

I just finished this book & am trying to absorb the shock of the conclusion that I didn't see coming til the last few pages. It gives you a different perspective of the Holocaust... from the eyes of an innocent 9 y.o. child on the outside looking in. I don't think I would have understood such things at that tender age either.

It's about a couple of 9 y.o. boys, but it definitely is not unsupervised reading by 9 y.o.'s.

A wonderfully moving story about how our mistaken impressions can alienate us from the ones who truly love us most. 3 sisters dealing with the hurt & estranged feelings over their 'aloof' mother are brought together in their mother's final days & learn that not only do feelings run deep but life's reasonings sometimes run deeper.

Keep the tissue box handy because the connection you'll feel with these gals will bring your own childhood feelings to the surface.

I must be the only person on the planet who didn't care for this book. A big portion of the story was set in 1946 & a lot of what I read just didn't seem consistant for that era which I guess distracted me from the characters. I also don't much care for a storyline that jumps around in time. No tears here but I was touched by the ending.
