I wanted to like it. I waited eagerly for this one to arrive. But I was very disappointed by the writing style, quite unlike every other book I have encountered in the Pantheon Fairy Tale Folklore Library. Perhaps the book is dated? But I'm not sure when it would have been acceptable for bad metaphor after bad simile after bad metaphor for pages and pages, on and on. I had to force myself to finish this and I mailed it out immediately, otherwise I would quote some examples.

It's a slow read because it is information dense with a lot of people coming into play. But it is well written, with a very thoughtful approach to all the issues at hand, presenting the shades of gray of the situation in a very eye opening way. I'm left hoping that the many remaining tribes of the Amazon find ways to survive the modern world in ways of their OWN choosing.

I knew very little about Norse mythology before reading this but I am now in love with it. This is my favorite over the more than a dozen books I have read in the Pantheon Fairy Tale & Folklore library. The stories are presented in chronological order and present a very entertaining experience in the beliefs of the culture, an inspiring culture that clearly believes life is for living hard, until your last possible breath. I just wish the Greek book had had the same quality of writing.
