A novel of stream-of-consciousness style, where you float with the characters through the book. The most unusual characters I have seen in a long time. Friend called it the saddest book she had ever read, but I found Sylvie liberating. Lovely book but a challenge to read. Worth it though.

I think this is the best book Henning Mankell has written. It has an excellent opening, that is shocking enough to keep you reading, and the story becomes a very interesting historical novel coinciding with the mystery he is so good at spinning. I was completely fascinated in this story and I sent copies of this book to friends who are mystery enthusiasts like me.
I highly recommend this book.

This book is a treasure, to be savored and kept close all your life. Not only did I love this book, but my husband was so crazy about it that he would read aloud passages to me while I was trying to get to sleep. He purchased hardcopies for his son and for himself, and continues to talk about it to anyone who will listen. Quiet and lovely, enriching and poignant. That is this book.
