This book I brought along with me on a cruise as I thought it would be great sea reading. It was less about Mary's adventures and more about her love life. She recounts tales of former lovers. However, I did enjoy the information contained about ships at sea, Coast Guard communications, charting, and porting. I feel like I could talk intelligently about boating now. I enjoyed the few times she delved into friendships, but thought some of her other relationships added a choppy, disjointed aspect to the book.

When I started this book with my 10 year old son, he was wondering why I was reading a story about love to him and seemed lackluster about reading it with me. However, a few chapters in the characters grew on him and he couldn't wait to keep reading and see what happens. It has a unique storyline in the fact that it is told from two key characters perspectives. It has helped him to understand that there are always two sides to the story and that intentions can be perceived from different lights depending on their own circumstances. A timely read for any adolescent.

I first read about Gianna in Focus on the Family's Brio Magazine as a teenager. Her story was so compelling many years ago that it has always stuck with me. When I saw this book in PBS I had to pick it up. It is a quick read and a conversational style that displays Gianna's youth at the time of this writing. I have seen Gianna on YouTube as a grown woman speaking to legislators all over the world. Her testimony of courage, faith, and love for humanity is one that relates to all. This book is not about debating pro-life vs. pro-choice, but it is a biography of an abortion survivor and admittedly will minister to you if you know someone who has had an abortion. Enjoy the read!

I worked my way slowly through this story, not because it lagged on, but because Yann Martel writes this book as if you are the castaway. He languishes vocabulary on all the minute details and thoughts/psychology of Pi Patel to fill the book to take you through 227 days afloat on a blistering salty sea. Magic, horror, bliss, and sadness transcend on you at each turn of the page. Chapters are kept short to ensure no one thought is landed on for too long.
I will definitely be reading more of Yann's books. They are spiritual, beautiful, and tragic. More authentic in character than anything I have read to date. Read this book, savor it...you will regret it's end and long for a new beginning.

The antics of Melonhead will leave you giggling. It reminds me of the boy version of Ramona Quimby. Melonhead is always up to something and although innocent, he ends up in many a sticky situations. I liked how this book showed kids in a tangible way some moral dilemmas and how other kids their age might deal with them and all sides of the story on who was being impacted. It is a perspective I don't think most books show by revealing the feelings of other characters being impacted by the main character. Nice job, Gillian Johnson. We'll be looking for more of your books to enjoy.

I loved this book. It was funny, heart-warming and immersed me in Kelly Corrigan's story of a cancer survivor, parent, and adult child of quite a character. Kelly has a knack for writing witty text that is thought provoking and captures those ordinary, everyday moments.
