Hilarious and delightful...much of the fun is in the footnotes! This is the way music history ought to be taught. This book is a short chronicle of the lives of the great musical composers. A fast and funny read that imparts tons of little-known information. I read things here, that are not in any musical history book I've ever seen before. All facts are guaranteed by the author to be 100% true and accurate. Who knew there were so many irreverent facts about Back, Beethoven and the Boys?

This is a great story of one of Oregon's pioneer women who lived in 1853 and crossed the prairies, mountains, and rivers to "arrive." Amanda became part of the Great California gold rush adventure. She eventually homesteaded in Oregon and raised a family of 15 children in the virtual wilderness - after being raised as an only child, and losing her own mother en route.

This is a compelling read! Probably the only known novel by an African American female slave and very possibly the first novel by a black woman anywhere. Hannah Crafts seems to be really recording her day to day experiences. Original sentences and thoughts are lined out and amended - very interesting! It shows her original thought and later her amended thoughts in many places. This manuscript is an amazing find, discovered by a brilliant historian - a fluke? Perhaps, but maybe not--it's a story every American should read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

This is a fantastic-can't-put-it-down read! I loved the facts and the entire objective of the author - to write the truth about real life in Kabul since 9/11. What an eye-opener. We have so very far to go with understanding our relationship with Afghanistan. Every US woman and man should read this - and then, probably weep.

This is a fantasy of the future, and a classic tale and as impressive as the day it was published. Huxley speaks in a prophetic voice, that is still contemporary, both in the particulars of his vision and his very real sense of impending doom and alarm.

This is a really clever Cinderella-twisted tale - a good read for anyone young, or in between! Gail Levin has a style similar to J.K. Rowling - with wild and crazy thoughts that make you think of the oddities of life and people. Ella is a most enjoyable character. She will stick with you, long after her story has ended.

It doesn't get any funnier than this book. This is a book of vignettes about the author's lunatic life. He reports his life episodes with side-splitting wit. As it says on the back cover: "If wit were measured in people, David Sedaris would be China: His talent is that huge." He could be the funniest writer alive. If you need to get your endorphine levels ratcheted up - read this book.

This is now an acknowledged classic and John Updike says it "remains a work of exemplary merit, still the most intelligent attempt by an American male to dramatize sexual behavior as a function of, rather than a suspension of, personality." I found it to be quite a fascinating read. The narrator is fixated, fascinated, and frustrated by women. His emotional state fluxes with his experiences of the hour - and his own imaginings lead him along in life, always in search of his next sexual experience.

5 Stars - wonderful story, deep and powerful reading. Jhumpa Lahiri knows the heart of Gogol and makes it bleed, right onto the page. I loved this book and will read it again and maybe again.

A super-duper work of fact. I could not put this down, and needed to know what else Ms. Ehrenreich would have to put up with while trying to survive, undercover, in another minimum wage job. 5 Star - real life study of NOT getting by in America - the land of opportunity. It is a shameful commentary of all that is wrong with this nation - and written for all the right reasons. Get a copy, read it - and then tell everyone you know about the experiences Ms. Ehrenreich survives.
