The author describes an eccentric professor and details the awful life stories of several of the people she's encountered but doesn't make any effort to elucidate what life can teach us about death or vice versa. I was disappointed.

I found the landscape Hoffman describes and the characters who inhabited it dreary and depressing. I realized halfway through the book that I had no sympathy for the characters: Hollis was narcissistic and abusive, wow -- just like Alan! -- Sue was snippy and judgmental and March self-absorbed. Gwen had possibility, but I stopped reading before she could develop one way or the other. Too much sturm und drang - high emotionalism and a revolt against good judgment.

The alphabetical format makes it easy to browse through topics -- I don't know much about Feng Shui, so this is a good first book that isn't too much information to take in. Lovely illustrations, too.

Where's Mom Now That I Need Her? Surviving Away from Home
Review Date: 12/17/2010
Helpful Score: 1

My son is going away to college next Fall and this is a great book that covers the basics of setting up your first home away from home. The ring-bound format allows me to add my own recipes, instructions and advice.
