I found the story of the sapper the most compelling part of this book, but maybe I'm not much of a romantic.

Although I have always been an enormous Margaret Atwood fan, I feel that her writing becomes more and more honed and beautiful with each successive book. If you are a fan of The Handmaid's Tale you will be absolutely floored by this book.

Though I prefer her fiction (which is less Jesus-y), Anne Lamott can make anything seem human and funny. I still find myself referring to a really irksome person as someone who could "make Jesus Christ drink gin straight out of the cat dish."
