A wonderful book on how God uses difficulties to humble us. When we are humbled and broken then He can do a great work in us and in others - things that were not possible when we were full of pride and self-sufficiency.

The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood
Review Date: 4/23/2010

This is a fascinating look at Africa in the early part of the 20th century. Huxley had an amazing childhood, peopled with independent spirits who went to "the wilds" of Africa to carve out their own destinies. Some fared better than others.

This book introduced me to the wonderful Agatha McGee. Hassler includes her in several other novels, but this is the best. McGee is an elderly woman who feels that life has passed her by. She begins a correspondence with a man in Ireland and things take a different turn. Not a romance per say, but a very good book.

This was my first Hassler book and I immediately fell in love with his characters and his writing. Agatha McGee is not your average spinster. She is looked upon as rigid and unbending, but to those who really know her she has a heart of gold. In A Green Journey she becomes disheartened with the modernization of the Catholic Church and begins a correspondence with another disgruntled Catholic in Ireland. What happens next is just amazing! I've since read three more of Hassler's books with Agatha as the protagonist. You are going to love her!

One of the great classics of Christian literature, My Utmost for His Highest will challenge you to go beyond shallow, self-centered Christianity and to learn to love God with "reckless abandon."

The One Year Book of Poetry (One Year Books)
Review Date: 2/24/2014

This is one of my favorite books for "meaty" poetry. No sing-song-y nonsense here. Just lots of deep spiritual truths put to rhyme. A powerful addition to your daily devotional reading. Explanations for the poems are included.

Parents in Pain: Overcoming the Hurt and Frustration of Problem Children
Review Date: 2/24/2014

This is a great book to read if you are struggling with your grown children's choices - especially if you are struggling with guilt. A very encouraging book.

Georgette Heyer is famous for her witty, sparkling dialogue. This book is no exception, yet the story is not as engaging as some of her other books.

If you have ever wondered how the Old Testament covenant was replaced by the New Testament one, this is the answer. But author Andrew Murray is not a technical writer as much as he is a devotional one. He shows how the first covenant was necessary to the understanding of the second one. Wonderfully inspiring.

One of the most inspirational books I've read in years. If you've ever wondered why/how God could make a covenant that seemed inadequate (the Old Covenant) before instituting the New Covenant, this book will make it very clear. I bought it on Kindle, but then had to get a hard copy so that I could read and re-read the underlined pages with ease.

Walking Faithfully with God: 1 And 2 Kings And 2 Chronicles (The New Inductive Study Series)
Review Date: 5/3/2014

Because of the inductive Bible study method I was able to dig into these books of the Bible as never before. Now these are my favorite books of the Bible which I return to again and again as a Bible study leader.
