This book is creepy, thought provoking, and mysterious, and will appeal to horror fans, philosophers, and mystery lovers in about equal measure. It explores the often conflicting emotions involved in romance, family life, the search for independence, and the struggle for truth and recognition of reality.

I really liked this book, but I'm sure it isn't for everyone. The author describes the physical process of 2 human bodies as they decay after death. This description is mixed in with stories about some of the events that occurred before their death. There is a bit of a mystery for a while about how the pople died, but the basic theme seems to be that people are mistaken when they assign meaning and cause to their life's events. A very thought provoking book.

This book is set in an unknown South American country where rebels take over the Vice President's house in a failed attempt to kidnap the President. It is a touching novel which weaves an unforgetable story out of such disparate elements as hostage taking, opera, chess, teenage dreams, undeveloped talents, and romance. The author skillfully draws you in to accept the improbable and believe the impossible. This book will not be easy to forget.

Reading this book is sometimes hard going, but deeply satisfying. For anyone who has struggled with the meaning of life and death (and who has not?), it provides moments of strain and pain, and times of rare joy. Be sure to read it all the way through.

All of the mysteries by Amanda Cross that I have read have been interesting, cerebral, and clever. This book has good character development, intricate detail, and a surprise ending.
