If you've read Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose or seen the HBO miniseries, then you know about Major Dick Winters, leader of Easy Company through much of WWII. If not, this book is a good place to start. I believe it is better than the Ambrose book and contains much of the same information, but it is all told from Winters' perspective.

I've never read a book written in verse before, so I wasn't sure how I would like this middle grade bestseller. I was pleasantly surprised at how reader-friendly it is. The story about a 12-year-old boy who loves soccer and learns to love books flows smoothly without excessive wordiness. Sometimes less is more.

This book was fascinating to me. It focuses on the recovery effort of the crew remains and shuttle pieces after Columbia broke apart upon re-entry on Feb. 1, 2003. I remember when it happened, but I had no idea that so much of the vehicle was found. Approximately 84,000 pieces of the shuttle (40 percent) were recovered from Texas with 25,000 people involved in the search over the course of several months. Agencies and leaders put aside territorial feelings and worked together in the largest ground search ever conducted.

Wonderfully narrated by the author! I enjoyed hearing about his life growing up and his journey into show business. A class act and a good book.
