Annie Henry and the Redcoats (Adventures of the American Revolution, Bk 4)
Review Date: 7/24/2006
Helpful Score: 3

From the back: Sixteen-year-old Annie, daughter of patriot Patrick Henry, has nearly grown up. And with the Revolutionary War in its fifth year, it seems like she and the war have been together forever! Even now her brothers are off fighting and her father is serving in the legislature to try to ensure American victory. Annie would love to do more for her country, but as a teenaged girl she has to settle for helping her mother take care of the house and the children. Until an idea comes to her-a way to be more involved.

My daughter really enjoys this series, so we bought the complete series in one volume for her. That is the only reason this one is being swapped!

Fun book meant to be used with a plastic decoder, however the book contains all of the answers written among the pictures, so the decoder is not neccessary. American history and trivia presented in an enjoyable way. My children really enjoy this whole series!

Identity: Who we are
Review Date: 8/5/2008

From the back: In this collection, people find their true selves in different ways-some in action, some in dreams, and some in the warmth of friendship. Young people have long struggled to discover their identities. In stories, plays, poems, and articles by writers including Paddy Chayefsky, Sharon Bell Mathis, Judith Ortiz Cofer, and Garry Trudeau, characters wonder and worry, striving to find places for themselves.

This ISBN is also the same for hardcover versions it seems.

Literature First Phonics with a Purpose Level B (Level B)
Review Date: 9/27/2007
Helpful Score: 2

There are 18 lessons and it looks like each lesson is made to be about a week long, although you could work through it faster if you did more than one page a day. It starts off with an excerpt from a poem or book. I recognize some of them at least, so you could get the complete version from the library if you wanted to. Then it has several workbook pages relating to the literature excerpt. It also lists a couple of other similar books to read, for example the first lesson is on the alphabet and secret codes. It recommends the children's books Koko's Kitten and Secret Codes, if you want to read more. The phonics lessons go through consonants and short vowels fairly quickly, then go through long vowels, blends, digrarphs, diphthongs, and more. I believe it is either the second half for 1st grade or the first half for 2nd grade.

Sea Otter Pup
Sea Otter Pup

Review Date: 7/19/2007
Helpful Score: 2

A delightful little book with every page in full colour. The background is done in pale green to light blue washes, over which the type is placed and the main characters and scenery are added. In this tale we are told how the mother otter goes about the daily task of feeding her pup. No hints of danger are included nor is there any suggestion that mother will not be able to provide. The intended audience for this story is the pre-school child.

Elizabeth Gatt is the illustrator and has done exceptionally well. The colours are restful and the illustrations are clear and accurate. Victoria Miles does presentations on B.C. wildlife all over the province. Her love of nature is evident in the manner in which she has presented this topic.

This is the first of a set of two in which this author and illustrator have collaborated.

This book would be enjoyed by pre-schoolers and those in the Primary grades.
