"For Special Services", John Gardner's second James Bond novel, improves on the first as he builds a tale of mystery and almost constant suspense. This time, Bond is teamed with Felix Leiter's daughter Cedar to find out more about the return of SPECTRE. More fleshed-out villains, a great Bond girl (who Bond can't go after due to her father), and exciting, suspenseful writing make one realize how underrated Gardner's books are. One of his best.

This is one of the best accounts of navy seal ops in Vietnam. It is probably one of the best novels about the war period. This one is full of action.

Pilar Valenzuela and Danny had been married for fourteen years and had two small boys. They had been sweethearts all through school and their marriage had been heaven. HAD BEEN!

Danny was a policeman with a shot at a position of Sergeant. He worked lots of overtime and missed many important family events. In short, Danny was a major work-aholic! And by putting his job first and his family second, he was destroying his marriage. Still, it came as a complete surprise to him when he came home the day after their anniversary (and he had forgotten it again) to find Pilar waiting for him with his suitcases packed! She refused to allow Danny to continue to put work before family any longer. She kicked him out. Finally realizing that he was losing the family he loved more than life, Danny was determined to change his working habits and win his wife back!

Uncommon Wisdom takes a different approach to his other books. His traditional books are based naturally on explaining the ideas. This book is grounded in experience and in relationship. Here FC takes a personal and musing approach. He shares his own life journey, doubts, fears and hopes, as he meets, talks and develops relationships with some of the great thinkers of our time. He shows us through his story how his thinking develops. We as readers share the unfolding process in his own being as he too struggles with the import of what he is learning.

The ideas in this book are embedded in story and in people. As such they are more "sticky" than ideas simply defined and outlined. It is one thing to have Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle explained. It is so much better to listen, via FC's ears and eyes, to Heisenberg talk.
