This book is the fourth in the Sigrid Harald series that Margaret Maron began writing before her very popular Deborah Knott series.
It takes place in New York City and features the quirky but brilliant homicide detective Sigrid Harald. I truly enjoyed the book when I read it in the 1990s and, having just re-read it, enjoyed it just as much although, of course, technology is outdated as are some other aspects of procedures and the city of itself. Still, Sigrid is a strong character and the mysteries involved are well constructed and not predictable. I highly recommend this book and the series.
Plus! I read that Maron is now going to treat us with a new Sigrid Harald book now that she's retired Deborah Knott.

The book/story seemed aimless until about half-way through. The book is told from the point of view of several characters and I knew that was leading up to a crossing of lives and ways, so I kept on reading, hoping for the best. The second half seemed much more substantial, as if Ms. Kostova finally had her feet under her and her direction more clear. The story did become more clear though Oliver's obsession or the reason for it was never completely clear; it seemed to be explained simply by his mental illness.
I enjoyed her prose--the description of Marlow's visit to his father was exquisite, as was the description of Oliver's paintings. I found myself wanting to see the actual paintings and it was disappointing that they don't exist. However, her language made them real in this reader's mind's eye.
Her visual descriptions were much better than most of her character studies.

This book was so well written that I immediately fell into the lives of the characters. Such beauty, happiness and sadness in one place. The story is two stories that take place ninety years apart and are intertwined in away the reader doesn't recognize until near the end. But throughout it is clear that what we see on the surface of people or relationships is not always what we think.
