My husband laughs at me because I discuss the logistics of zombie warfare. We live above a Starbucks in a secure building; if zombies attacked we could saw a hole in the floor and drop into Starbucks (provided no zombies were made there while getting a grande mocha latte) and stock up on provisions and biscotti. The narrow staircases could be blocked and the zombies would have to break the glass to turn the handles of the electronic secure doors, which they probably aren't smart enough to do. As long as they didn't pile up at the base of the building and build a ramp up to the balcony, they probably couldn't get us. If you think like this, "The Zombie Survival Guide" is for you. My weapons enthusiast brother in law said the research was accurate. He wouldn't comment about the zombie portion. He thinks I'm a nut.

This book is not only hilarious, but it makes sense. I, too, get laughed at for how serious I take this book. But, when the zombie uprising is at hand you'd be much happier and safer if you had taken a few hours to flip through this how-to guide.

Essential reading. When the dead do beign to rise, I'll be ready. World War Z, also by Max Brooks, is the best zombie novel ever written. Check em' both out.

Excellent book. I am now the neighbor coordinator in case of a local zombie infestation. This training manual contains all of the essentials: weapons, tactics, supplies and first hand information from those who have survived an onslaught of the undead. Required reading.

Amazingly well written comedy with a message. I highly recommend this book and its sister novel "World War Z" for anyone that has a slightly macabre sense of humor (or just wants to be in the know for the final war of the human race). This book is a great addition to any library.

I found this a very interesting read. The thought that went into this was incredible. Mr. Brooks seems to have planned for every last contingency from what you need to survive, to where to go, weapons, travel means, etc. This is a must read for anyone planning to survive the upcoming zombie apocalypse!

This genre hasn't stopped leaving me amazed yet. I'm floored that I'm so in love with a genre that I never, not for one second, ever thought I'd read. I'm loving every second of it.
Max Brooks seems to be one of the best. I heard his name and the titles of his books before I really got into zombie books so once I fell in love I knew I had to check them out. I loved World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War - loved it.
This I also loved, and this could have went all wrong in the wrong hands. I didn't list this to-read when I found it because I wasn't sure what to expect. I knew I liked/loved the "standard" zombie stories and this was obviously not that. Then again, WWZ isn't either.
I gave in and eventually knew I had to try it and I'm thankful I did. The second half of the book, very similiar to WWZ, is my favorite by far. The first half could have easily gotten tedious but it didn't - Brooks (thankfully) kept it at an appropriate page length IMO. Just when it was *about* to *start* getting a little bogged down we got to the 'Recorded Attacks'.
I can't imagine the work that goes into creating any book, much less one like this. This reads like an actual guide. I have no doubt that if (when?) the zombies come for me I'll know what to do. That's not to say I'll actually do it. I'm far too lazy for all the work that must go into battling zombies. But I will make sure Julia and any other close family make it to my friend Felicia's house. There will be no safer place on the whole of the East Coast, hell, maybe even all of North America.
Hey, maybe I'll even be a hero, once everyone is situated I'll go out with my trusty gun, lead the zombies away from my friends and family, and take the bullet with my name written on it. Then they can say, instead of "damn, she was a lazy bitch", "damn, that Eva, she really came through for us. She even gave her life so that we could have more time to get ready."

I loved it. At first, one would think that the tongue in cheek factor would override any semblance that this book is filled with good information. That would be incorrect. Max Brooks created a book that was very entertaining and yet thought provoking. His advice is spot on. Although one might think that the specific scenario of mindless flesh eaters coming to feast upon the living is far fetched, the advice actually would apply in the event of a widespread, anarchistic event. It is filled with humor, as well. It is a good read that might get one to think about preparing for emergency.

Max Brooks and World War Z is the Studs Terkel of Zombie books. It's written absolutely seriously but it had me on edge. Therefore, I HAD to get the Zombie Survival Guide.... just in case.

I have to laugh at myself, because, as mentioned by other readers, I discuss the Survival Guide as if it's Gospel. I would live in my attic because it has pull down stairs, and you know Zombies and stairs! And they'd never figure out the pull down (though I'll pull up the cord from inside the attic.) My friends laugh at me when I get really enthusiastic about zombie eradication and zombie survival kits etc. But as I tell them.... when the uprising starts, don't come whining to me for help!
Both of Max Brooks' books are keepers. I probably won't ever post my edition of the Survival Guide, because I never know when I'll need it. Sorry.
PS: get rid of your gas powered generators. They're too loud.

I am a fan of the apocalypse, really any kind, but especially Zombies. It is written as though it is a true how too book, quoting military facts, "media stories" and "first hand accounts". Not to say that the information in this book would not be helpful, there are many tried and true survival tactics and some really good advise. Max Brooks has a very vivid and active imagination and did not leave any stone unturned. He tells us how to deal with different types of Zombies, from "Night of the Living Dead" slow movers to the more modern fast paced "Walking Dead" undead. He goes over different weaponry and their uses, benefits and down sides. Camping and scavenging, bugging out and hunkering down. Like I said, this is not a how to guide so if you are serious you will be better off getting a "real" survival guide but this is an interesting book to read.
