Remi tells the story of her idyllic childhood and abrupt rupture with her family when she was sent from Nigeria to a posh English boarding school. After someone informs the rest of the girl that her black skin will rub off, she is ostrasized until she learns how to cope. Cut off from family and culture, in her mind she becomes "English" and the strange looks and ostracizm that she attracts cause conflict.
Excellent book on culture and identity, not just the extreme example of Remi but how we all find our place in the world.
