I'm a huge Roberts/Robb fan, but must admit I didn't care for this storyline.... at least not enough to put #2 on my wl. (And that's a first for her books!)

Very well written. Not loving the story line however..

I'm a Roberts and JD Robb fan and this wasn't what I expected. I love the final portion of the book and am looking forward to what comes next in the series. It had the great character interactions that I so enjoy from this author. I felt like the beginning was world building without enough romance. It seemed like I was watching a mashup of Walking Dead and Mad Max instead of reading a Roberts book.

Meh. I did read the first few chapters and then spotchecked the rest, so my remarks are not from thorough study. That said, the reason I didn't read it was that from page one it annoyed me -- the style was simplified for easy reading: limited vocabulary, short sentences, little to lend nuance or flavor. It appears to be written at a middle school level. (So was The Hobbit, but Tolkien was a genius.) It's a mishmosh of elements from other books and films -- there will be surprises only for people who've never seen The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones or other fantasy TV series, or who have never read The Stand. The only suspense is who will survive, and for how long, but since the characters are thinly veiled TV stereotypes, it was impossible for me to care. I do give the author points for demonstrating in her story how disease spreads in our modern age (by travel) in a way that makes it clear what the problem is. I think Ms Roberts's earlier straight romances were much better done.

This book seemed rushed to me. Ms. Roberts had a concept about world being taking over by paranormal creatures and wanted to get us there without much background so we we have endless pages of plague and then last few chapters gets to where she wants to be. should have just started there and referenced all happenings before.

Wow... just Wow! I can't get over how much I enjoyed this book. I'll admit, this is my first Roberts book so I wasn't expecting anything. I love post-apocalyptic stuff and then to have fantasy mixed in just put the icing on the cake! Fantastic characterization, fast pacing and terrific story line. I can't wait to get my hands on the 2nd book.

"The Doom" is killing humans, and quickly. The ones that survive are called the Uncanny and hunted by Raiders who just like to kill and the government who is trying to find a cure. If you like witches, elves, fairies, wizards and other supernaturals, you will love this book. Great adventure!!
