Civil War novels can be a complicated project to undertake with all the complexities of today's knowledge and perspective. If I am being honest, I felt that this one missed the target by a bit. It seemed to lack much of the hardships of war during the story. I really enjoyed the tug and pull of having Caroline, a Yankee widow, falling for both a Union soldier and a Confederate soldier. However, it did feel as though the resolution of that at the end was a bit forced. Jubie, the pregnant runaway slave, created tension by her presence in the household but her life story didn't quite seem fleshed out. I felt sad that this deeper understanding of the slave's perspective seemed glossed over. On the flip side, I was very impressed with the writing of Jacob, fighting for his life during a battle in the beginning of the story. Worth a read but provides more romance than history.
