"You've no right to be running sheep in this part of the state," she said. "This is cattle country."

A dangerous smile tugged at a corner of his mouth, underscored by the dance of lightning in the dark sky behind him. "This is open range. And only a cattleman's woman would talk like that."

Rachel had to raiser her voice to be heard above the echoing thunder. "A cattleman's daughter!" she snapped. "And if you so much as lay a finger on me ----"

His cold, bitter laughter interrupted her. "I'm aware of who your father is, Miss Tolliver. I've even heard a few tales about his spoiled, redheaded hellion of a daughter. Believe me, I'd just as soon pick up a live rattlesnake as lay a finger or anything else on you...!"

Cattleman's daughter Rachel Tolliver believed that sheep ranchers like Luke vincente had no business out on the open range. Yet despite his troubled past, he was an honorable man, driven by a passion for the west and for her. But the range war brewing would surely forbid any declaration of their wildfire love! Luke vincente had little use for rich men's daughters, and Rachel Tolliver's blood ran royal blue with cattle baron cash. And yet, for all she was the enemy he could see them taking on all comers together. But could she truly make the hard choice fo face an uncertain future in his arms.

As daughter of a wealthy cattleman, Rachel Tolliver was on her way back home from three years of art school back East. Riding in a rented buggy, Rachel suddenly came upon a small herd of sheep. Surprised, she swerved to miss the sheep and wrecked the buggy.

When the owner of the herd, Luke Vincente accosted Rachel, tempers flared until a sudden thunderstorm dampened their anger. Rachel knew that sheep men and cattle men did not coexist well. It did not take long for her to see that a range war was brewing and that her parents and Luke Vincente would be in the middle of the mix.

Although her inclination was to be pro-cattle, it didnt take long for Rachel to see that Luke was not encouraging the conflict; it looked like members of her family were harassing Luke and his sheep.

Because she was a fair-minded person, Rachel heard both sides and realized that Luke had a right to raise his sheep in peace. As she warned him of pending danger, Rachel came to see that Luke could not win without help. Was she strong enough to side with Luke?

This book was interesting throughout; the main characters were admirable, their adversaries were devious.
