The characters all speak in an odd stilted manner, and the hero keeps treating the heroine like dirt. Then they have sex and get married. That's romantic!

This is first novel of the Legacy trilogy set in England in the Regency era. There are unexpected plot twists, witty dialogue and an truly engaging cast of characters that contribute to the charm of this regency romanace. Catherine Coulter's characters quickly come alive and draw the reader into the story. You will find yourself rooting for the good guys and hissing at the bad guys. This is an entertaining read with interesting and varied characters, historical local color and a well-paced plot. There is a reluckant Earl, an illegitimate Duchess, and three servants who are cocky, smart, good plotters and better friends who don't know the meaning of subservient. There are buckets of intrigue, laughter, and a love story that will keep you turning the pages.

This is the first in a trilogy. I loved this book, and the series (read also the Nightingale Legacy, and the Valentine Legacy). I found all of these to be quite funny at times, and the hero/heroines unique. One of the first Coulter novels I read. I just had to keep the series, and plan to re-read them .

England during the Regency period... two strong characters..an Earl and a Duchess, intertwine their lives and throw in a cast of subservient (really ??) servants and this book brings you love and laughter...
