First, I appreciate the fact that there were photos of the important people in this tragic drama. All too often, writers of these mini-history lessons fail to understand that photos, maps, and drawings help place the people and time for the reader. We usually aren't history buffs and don't know the circumstances of the actions described. So anything that helps us anchor the information is appreciated.

After reading this story, I am dismayed that misunderstandings and fear caused this wholesale destruction of human life. The photo of the survivors (who looked abjectly demoralized) says it all. The photo shows their total loss of hope.
I've been reading about the Wounded Knee incident and each time I hear that 20 (yes, twenty) soldiers received the Medal of Honor, I am heartsick. That is so demeaning for the victims.
