The story of two years in New York City as a fledgling medical examiner, Melinek examines every kind of death, including the deaths from the Sept 11 attack. Her humanity and sense of humor prevail as well as her excitement at seeing and trying new things.

The book is written in collaboration with her husband, T.J. Mitchell, and it's clear that the two have the kind of relationship most couples would envy.

In the end, Melinek praises especially those who have taught her how to approach a body or a scene. Those who organized the collection and examination of remains at the World Trade Center made it manageable and functional, and many New Yorkers are grateful.

A fascinating glimpse into the profession, told simply and with care.
