Hard to put down. A whodonnit without any murder victim. Who donnit to the pretty widow next door and why won't she reveal the father of her baby?
Helpful Score: 2
I generally like books by Barbara Delinsky, but I just couldn't get into this one. I found the whole situation very petty and sad--the women and men were all gossiping about the young widow on their street and who could have fathered the baby she is carrying. The dysfunctional families portrayed were sad and depressing, as were the women trying to figure out which of their husbands had fathered the widow's baby. A real downer, full of deceit, jealousy, and hatred.

Just an FYI -- the very beginning of this book deals with Infertility ... so if that is a difficult subject for you, I suggest skipping the book. I couldn't continue reading it, just hit too close to home.

Three married couples in peaceful suburban Connecticut are challenged and forever changed by the presence of the woman next door...
Along with their husbands, Amanda, Karen, and Georgia are a close-knit circle of friends enjoying seemingly ideal lives in an upscale neighborhood. But when they learn that their lovely younger neighbor, widowed for a year and presumably still unattached, is pregnant, the strains and imperfections of their lives come into full focus. As they ponder who the father might be, each of the women harbors suspicions about her own husband -- and each is forced to a crisis point that will strengthen or shatter her marriage.

"The Women Next Door" was entertaining. Delinsky addresses the emotions of infertility and the deception of appearances extremely well. The story was decent, but the ending was predictable. Better developed characters would have made the story more intriguing...Not her best but still a good read.

Great book... Easy read...consistant story throughout the book, Wasn't any slow "when is something going to happen" parts. This is my first Barbara Delinsky. I enjoyed it.

Enjoyable, good insight into some of the crazy ways we women think!
Great book! The story's ending was great - you find out "who done it" and then it sums up everything quickly. There were some predictable parts, but the author doesn't dwell on these too long to make it a boring ending.
A very unlikely story about insecure housewives from middle-class suburbia. Was a little disappointed in this Delinsky book.
This book is a delightful read - Delinsky at her best - about a widowed neighbor who is pregnant. The seemingly perfect lives of her neighbors fall apart because of suspicions, jealousy and mistrust.
A great read... makes you wonder if you truly know your husband and your neighbors.
Typical relationship novel with well drawn female characters and a minor mystery plot
Great read! Kept me guessing what was actually going on within the neighborhood.. very realistic characters... real page turner.
Wonderful story involving family dynamics and relationship. Suspense in the not knowing how it will all end. Very easy read and engaging.
Her many twists and turns in daily life are delightful to read.
Loved this book, little bit of a suspense but good.
Very good book. I couldn't put it down! This is my first Barbara Delinsky, so I don't about her others, but I really liked it!
Good story, a lot going on, but the build up to the ending was a disappointment
great book! couldnt wait to find out who fathered her baby. i thought it was the other guy!!
Along with their husbands, Amandas, Karen and Georgia are a close knit circle of friends enjoying seemingly ideal lives in an upscale neighborhood. This is NOT a book to read if you are having marital problems or if you worry that your husband is cheating. I loved it as it did not relate to my life in any way so I was able to see it as fiction.
Delinsky peers into the dark corners of ideal marriages ... and makes you realize that "the woman next door" could be you.

Usually don't read Barbara Delinsky, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
Booklist says, "An achievment...one of her best books to date."
In Barbara Delinsky's The Woman Next Door, three women who live next door to a lovely, pregnant and reclusive widow have their lives turned upside down by their husbands' interest in her. These three wives are friends, but each can't help but wonder if her husband is the father of the baby. As a result, each woman reevaluates her life and finds out what's truly important to herself.
Amanda and Graham O'Leary have an ostensibly happy life, but infertility treatments have put a strain on their marriage. Russ Lange is a house husband while his wife travels the country to promote her juice company. Karen Cottar has dealt with her husband's infedelity before. When a crisis happens at the high school, it adds to each household's tension. I liked this story very much; the type of book women like to read. I give it an A!

I was actually pleasantly surprised when I read this book. I found myself really caring about the characters, and I nearly cried at the end!
A widowed neighbor becomes pregnant long after her former husband passes on. The close knit group of families living on the same street start questioning who has been involved with this relatively isolated widow and as a result is the baby's father. Is is on of the husbands of the families living on the street? That is the question throughout the book.

Four stars at least. Very good book.
The woman next door is young, attractive, widowed, and pregnant. Since the neighboring
ladies know that she keeps to herself and doesn't receive visitors, they naturally wonder:
"Could my husband be the father?" Delinsky's latest novel is like a murder mystery, with
clues and even red herrings thrown in along the way, but Delinsky surprises the reader in
the end. Her plot concerns the personal problems of the three close couples who live on the
widow's cul-de-sac, focusing mainly on Amanda and Graham. Every detail of their own baby
quest is noted, including fertility treatments and the dissension with Graham's
baby-demanding family. Amanda's job as a school counselor is highlighted, especially when a
teenager commits suicide at school. Will Amanda have a baby of her own? And will the father
of her neighbor's baby make himself known? Popular author Delinsky (The Vineyard) has
written another book that will appeal to everyone.

Another great Barbara Delinsky read!
In my opinion, one of the most satisfying things about Barbara Delinsky's books are the depth of her characters. They are *real* with real problems and real faults. her characters are not larger or prettier than life. They are not jetting around the world on an unlimited budget. I never have a problem putting myself in one of her books, I feel like I get to know her characters - they are friends (some of them) or acquaintenances (others of them). The Woman Next Door is no exeption - great story, great characters - very worthwhile reading!
In a spellbinding novel about the hope of dreams, the power of suspicion, and the fragility of relationships, Barbara Delinsky stirs things up in quiet suburbia with The Woman Next Door. Three seemingly secure marriages begin to unravel when a young widow whos new to the neighborhood turns up pregnant and no one knows who the father is. Amanda wonders if the strain of infertility has finally led her husband Graham to take desperate measures to ensure he has a child. For Karen, suspicion only seems natural, given that her husband, Lee, has been unfaithful several times before. And Georgia cant help but wonder if the demands of her career have finally driven a permanent wedge between herself and her stay-at-home husband, Russ. Delinsky carefully peels away the surface façades in this cliquish clan of women, revealing their soft, vulnerable underbellies in a process thats both riveting and painful. But thanks to Delinskys poignant prose, its also wonderfully unforgettable.
This is the first Delinsky book that I read. I loved it! It was a quick, relaxing read. I was actually surprised at some things in the story.
A fast read. Entertaining.
A Great story with a happy ending for all involved.Great Book!!
