This is a children's fantasy book and I found it to be just ok. Some of it was just too predictable and other parts were too unexplained. Somehow whenever the kids needed something, just the right person showed up. This was a fairly typical "parents disappear and kids go on quest to save them" book, but there were some interesting features, such as Atlantis being real, and Ice Dust powering the good magic. I also liked the way kindness got Abby past the monster. A child would probably enjoy this more than I did.
A good fantasy read for kids eight to eleven, with funny characters and a superb villain.
