Once again Jordan delivers a masterpiece in the 9th book of his epic, "The Wheel of Time". Book 9 sees Mat, Thom & Juilin seeking to escape the Seanchan-occupied city of Ebou Dar, while Rand has to juggle repressing Seanchan invaders while hunting down renegade Ashamen.

For those who don't know, Jordan's writing style is very similar to that of Tolkein. He crafts deep plots & richly detailed environments throughout his books. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loved Tolkein, or to anyone interested in fantasy. One area in which Jordan surpasses Tolkein (and I know there are many who would lynch me just for saying that!) is in his descriptions of battles. I seldom feel like I don't know what is going on in the heat of an action packed sequence.

If you're new to Jordan, then you really should start with book one of The Wheel of Time, which is titled "The Eye of The World". The series really is one epic story broken down into volumes which must be read in order.

Actually this book is just "good" not fantastic as are most of the volumes in this series. So you need to read it for continuity. In large part it chronicles Perrin's attempt to rescue Faile from renegade Aiel. Jordan's stories move along glacially and that also hurts the book's contribution to the series. There is a place, indeed many places, for Jordan's attention to detail, describing people and places, but this ain't one of them. This needed to be an action book, not an establishing story. It fits in well with the rest of the series, but don't expect the sense of wonder of earlier volumes as the young people learned they had until-then unknown powers and are key players in the future of the world.

A wonderful continuation of Rand's story. He finally has to face all three of the ladies in his life and is bonded to them. Perrin is still searching for his love as Mat finally meets his.

Yep! It really did take me over two years to read. A good book, I just got tired of carrying it all the time. I don't do well with books that have a large number of characters. It makes even harder if you put the book down for months at a time! The saga continues . . . what else is there to say! [3.5/5]
