12th in the series, but probably easy to pick up for a new reader. It's an easy read and I whipped right through it. No real surprises, the murder back in Colleton County went exactly where I thought it would and the solution to Joanna's death is also easy to guess. I really enjoyed how Deborah found Cal even though I guessed where he would be. But there are some definite eye-roll moments. They're trying to trace the murdered woman's movements and find out who she saw last - and Deborah sees dark hair on the sofa-bed's sheets. Does she say "OMG I found a clue!" No, she washes the sheets. C'mon. Twice someone comes into the house while they're sleeping, rummages around and takes stuff, and they don't wake up? Hmmm maybe other people sleep better than I do when they're in a strange place and desperately worried. But there's something to be siad for familiarity, I'm happy enough to give them a pass and go on to the next book.

One of the best in the Deborah Knott series!

I don't agree that it was so "fast moving" particularly. There seemed not to be a lot of excitement about her missing step-son. The first murder back in NC seemed to add nothing to the book, but extra pages.

Judge Deborah Knott is just married to Sheriff Deputy Dwight Bryant and about as happy as it is possible to be. But they are still learning how to be married as they approach their one month anniversary.

Then a disturbing call from Dwight's son, Cal, sends Dwight to Virginia to see why Cal's mother isn't with him on that night. It turns out that Dwight's ex is missing and has been for a couple of days, and soon after Dwight's arrival Cal becomes another missing person.

Deborah joins Dwight in Virginia as they struggle to find Cal and soon they are dealing with his mother's murder as well.

This is another excellent book from Maron with characters that are so real I think of them as old friends.
