Dragonsbane was the first Hambly book I ever read and still one of my favorite books. Hambly writes with wonderful depth of character. John, the dragonsbane of the Winterland series, still strikes me as the prototype for Diana Gabaldon's Jamie.

Contains "Dragonsbane" and "Dragonshadow" (Books 1 and 2 of the Winterlands Series). This is a great series by a wonderful author.

John Aversin, the nearsighted and mudspattered lord of Alyn Hold in the northern Winterlands, is the only man alive known to have slain a dragon, and now he is being called upon to slay another. Morkeleb the Black has seized the Deep of Ylferdun from the dwarves and threatens the lands of the southern king. Jenny Waynest, midwife and healer of Alyn Hold and mother of John's sons, goes with him to the southern court. Once there, the heroes find nothing is as they expected. Rebellion splits the realm, and Zyerne, a sorceress of seemingly unlimited power, holds the king under an evil spell. When they learn that Zyerne has plans for both dragon and Deep, John and Jenny steal away to challenge the black dragon...

"Though it was nearly impossible, killiing a dragon was the greatest test of skill and courage a true knight could hope for. Ten years ago, when the Golden Dragon 1st reared it's head in the northland of Wyr, many men died for honor."
A very interesting read
