At it's heart Winter of the Wolf Moon is a mystery/thriller. An ex cop who owns 6 cabins in the wilderness between the USA and Canada rents them out to snowmobilers.
One day he takes in an Indian lady to protect her from her homicidal boyfriend. He lets her spend the night at one of his cabins. But in the morning she is missing and the cabin is trashed. He feels responsable and we are off on a crazy ride that's lots of fun.
What sets it apart is the setting(The area on the border between Canada and the U.S.A., in what is generally freezing cold, often snow covered, and adjacent to still existing wilderness).
The author Steve Hamilton, writes a great story. I didn't want to put it down.
But the way he makes you see and feel this particular environment brings me into it as if I was there.
Try it. You'll like it.

I am really enjoying the Alex McKnight books. Alex is such a character and a likeable one at that. The mystery is involving and, frankly, I could hardly put the book down until all was solved. The author makes you feel the cold of that Michigan winter which is as much a character in the story as Alex McKnight. Brrrr!

When a young Ojibwa woman asks him for shelter from her violent boyfiend, McKnight agrees. But after secreting her in one of his cabins, he finds her gone the next morning. I really like the Alex McKnight series. This is the second one, and the second one I've read. I'm looking forward to reading the rest.
