I loved this book! I'd never heard of Mildred Walker before, but my book club chose it so I read it, and I was very impressed. The descriptions of the land and the people are so real - I felt like I was right there. I learned a lot about life in the 40's on a Montana wheat ranch. Reading about Ellen growing up, falling in love, misunderstanding, then understanding her parents and their life was quite an experience. I'd recommend this book!

This book has excellent descriptions, and is a good 'coming of age' book.

Beautifully written story about a young woman growing up in Montana. I really enjoyed it and had no idea it was originally written so many years ago.

This was a fine story, but a little slow moving for me.
Mildred Walker does an amazing job of drawing you into the lives of a people whose lives depended on the success or failure of crops. Although the story is woven around the wheat crops, it is really a story of a family that faces trials and triumphs in life that will hold them together in spite of the circumstances that threaten to split this family apart. There is such deep hidden meaning to all this story that will only be discovered and revealed at the ending, and to say too much about that would surely take away from the suspense and the captivity that this book will surely bring. A truly wonderful book.
