Jury is called to the scene of a crime where a little girl has been shot. The trail leads to a cold case in another village where a little girls has been kidnapped. Melrose Plant pretends to be a gardner to get close to the missing child's home. The mystery takes many twists and turns. As is usual for Martha Grimes, one never loses interest.

Why have I ignored Martha Grimes and her absolute stunning alter ego Richard Jury? I was hooked by the calm protagonist who works for Scotland Yard and will have to catch up on the 18 other novels she created to feature this detective. The Winds of Change is a crime story within another story of illusion. While investigating the shooting of a very young girl on the streets of London, Jury goes to the countryside of Cornwall to investigate the disappearance of another young girl, only the trail to this one is stone cold, over four years cold. The story weaves both investigations into a tightly played story, filled with richly developed characters, most of whom are not what they seem.

Vintage Martha Grimes! Wonderful "mystery-in-the-past" with the usual clever repartee between Plant and Jury. A delight with a surprise ending.

An English policeman story. Quite well done but a little too wordy for me. It is a Richard Jury novel.

I love Martha Grimes and think this series is great. My favorite character is Melrose Plant, a secondary character, but very memorable.

A 4-year-old girl is found shot in the back in London. Is her death related to the disappearance of another little girl 3 years ago in Cornwall? Many of the same suspects seem to be involved. Richard Jury sets out to discover what's going on.

This book is well worth the time it takes to read. It connects seemingly random occurrences with intrigue and suspense. This is the first Richard Jury novel, and it also introduces Melrose Plant. Martha Grimes did a very good job with this one!
