Very suspenseful and interesting - I was completely caught off guard by the ending, and had to go back through the book looking for clues that pointed to his ending. You will not be able to put this one down.

She's on the glinting edge of East-West confrontation, a beautiful and accomplished scholar who has suddenly become our newest ambassador to an Iron Curtain country, a woman who is about to dramatically change the course of world events - if she lives. For Mary Ashley has been marked for death by the world's most proficient and mysterious assassin, and plunged into the nightmare of espionage, kidnapping, and terror. Here, only two people - both powerfully attractive and ultimately enigmatic men - can offer her help. And one of them wants to kill her."
During the Cold War, the President of the United States asks college professor and Mrs. Average America Mary Ashley to fill the very important post of Ambassador to Romania. She is flattered, but declines because her husband's job requires him to stay here. Faster than you can say "Conspiracy theory," the husband has a fatal accident and Mary is off to Bucharest, where the protocol is stifling, her office is bugged, and her assistant, smart aleck Mike Slade, just may be trying to kill her.
This story is a bit of a departure for Sidney Sheldon, who usually writes romantic thrillers about spunky, single young women. Mary Ashley is brave, but definitely from the Donna Reed School for Wives and she has two (perfect) kids, to boot. The character I liked best was the enigmatic master assassin, Angel, who has killed some of the world's most influential people, and now find Mary Ashley on his to-do list. The ever-smirking Mike Slade is a fun and likeable character. You'll learn a lot about diplomatic protocol in this tidy little political thriller.

Sheldon did an excellent job of weaving the plot with mystery and suspense. He kept you so you never knew what was going to happen next. There were plenty of twists and turns in this mysterious murder plot.

A really good story. I like the idea of short segments in a book rather than long chapters. The ending was really surprising!!
An engaging mix of action, murder, and sex!

Sidney Sheldon is always a good, fast read!
One of my favorite mystery novels, is never outdated. Very well written and a nail-biter to the end.
espionage and kidnapping move this story
Pretty good, a little slow in parts. Really had a nice twist at the end though! A must for any Sheldon fan.
GREAT MYSTERY WRITER--LOVE ALL HIS BOOKS.

From the back cover: "In a bizarre assassination plot aimed at the two world leaders, the Russian premier is killed."
been a while since i have read this, but i did keep it to re-read. i remember it being better than average.
Pretty well-worn copy, but very readable. Wonderful story!
My cover is different, Black with a woman in a mink on the front (I think it must be a newer cover) You cannot miss with Sheldon! A guaranteed good read!
I picked this book up at a garage sale and I have not read it. Hopefully someone out there would like too.
