Iris Johansen's first book in the Wind Dancer series. Not as intriguing as the follow up books but still a good read.

a lively and imaginative blend of romance and adventure set in early-16th-century Italy. A small gold statue of the winged horse Pegasus that, as legend has it, was given to Lionello Andreas's family at the fall of Troy has been stolen by Lion's enemy, Francisco Damari. The rightful owner intends to steal it back. A contact alerts him to an accomplished pickpocket whose loyalty and skills can be bought: 16-year-old Sanchia, a slave owned by a local printer. Lion acquires the girl, intending to exploit her talents to recover the statue and then retire her to a life of comfort. But the plan goes awry, and and by the time Sanchia falls into the hands of the brutal Damari, Lion has already begun to wonder if his real treasure might in fact be a light-fingered young woman. In Lorenzo Vasaro, companion to the hero, Johansen offers an unlikely but likable character who upstages everyone else in the book, a worldly-wise and intriguing blend of ruthlessness and charm.

At first when I realized that the book was set in 1503, I was not looking forward to another boring historical novel, but I was soooo proven wrong!!!! This held my attention. Romance, history, suspense. I loved this book and am so glad I continued to read. I'm really looking forward to the next in the trilogy, although this stood on it's own very well.

The indomitable slave Sanchia and the man who bought her on a back street in Florence.Passionate, powerful condottiere Lionello Andreas would love Sanchia and endanger her with equal wild abandon as he sought to win back the prize possession of his family, THE WIND DANCER.

Renaissance Ittaly, where intrigues were as intricate as carved cathedral doors and affairs of state were ruled by affiars of the bedchamber. Murder, the plague, and of course the vileness of the catholic church, behind most of the misery.
