A paranormal anthology by 4 romance authors. Trade paperback. I won a copy of this book and it was signed (!!) so no way I can repost it - sorry. The stories are:
1) Animal Magnetism by Maggie Shayne - a vet with a special talent for communicating with animals (Dr Macy McNamara) meets police officer Jay Harris when he comes into her examination room with a bleeding dog. The dog was shot while trying to protect her owner from a rapist and is the only witness who can identify him. Now Macy, who has spent most of her life hiding her talent and being cold towards people, must convince the detective that she is not crazy and the dog told her who the rapist is. A pleasant/comfort sort of read.
2) Paradise by Meljean Brook - part of her Guardian series, which I had never read before. I had no problems understanding this world though - some very interesting world-building details that I enjoyed, and backstory of the past/relationships with other characters is explained well. A demon is stalking vampires and the Guardian Selah teams up with Paradise, Oregon vampire leader Lucus Marsden to stop the killings. I really appreciated the details about the nature of vampires/Guardians that this author explained to the reader (eg. vampires can't taste food, only blood, Guardians abilities have to do with their past life).
3) Hunter Kiss by Marjorie M. Liu - an introduction to a new series about Maxine Kiss - a demon hunter whose living tattoos protect her from harm but are also her curse. Really interesting character and world. Told from a first person present tense viewpoint. I was really surprised by the quality of the writing in this one. Very different in a good way from the other book I've read by this author.
4) Wild Hearts in Atlantis by Alyssa Day - Atlantean warriors, centuries old battle vampires and shapeshifters to protect humanity. In a world where vampires are becoming increasingly powerful politically, the Atlanteans must ally with some shapeshifters who haven't sided with the vampires. Bastian is the ambassador sent for this task and his first contact is half-shapshifter Kat Fiero, who he carries a torch for. I had trouble with the dialog in this one. Seemed to switch from modern day slangish vernacular to a stilted formal speech..

stories by maggie shayne, Marjorie Liu, and Alyssa Day were very good. The one story by Meljean Brook was disjointed and confusing and bored me to tears.

I got the book for the Marjorie Liu story which was awesome as always, the rest, not so much.
The first story in the book of anthologies was unreadable. I couldn't get past page two.
A man rushes a dog suffering from a gun shot wound into an animal hospital and the female vet has to take time to check her libido before she can turn her attention to the dog. OK, hate her from the get-go. I can tell this is going to be a woman who doesn't trust people so she becomes a vet and is inexplicably attracted to a complete stranger who is so hot that she can't concentrate on a dying dog. stupid.
I am giving it 3 stars only because the Liu story was good and should be read.

I read this book for the story by Liu but I also read the Shane story which was good. I could not get through the Brook book, wow, it was either horribly written or I was tired, cause it was baad. I did not read the last book because I got what I wanted out of it for the Lui story.
The Lui story is a prequel to the Iron Hunt, if you are going to read that series I suggest you read this book first.

Good short stories from some of my favorite authors. They give minor characters a chance to have their own story. They even alow major characters to develope more deeply. It is a good collection of what their other stories are about.

Getting a short story by Alyssa Day was the draw to this book, but it didn't really deliver.

I got this book to read Bastien's story from Day's Warriors of Poseidon series. As expected, it was a good installment, although brief in short story form. I also enjoyed the other stories in the book. I have never read anything by Liu or Brook, but enjoyed their stories as well. Maggie Shayne is already one of my favorite authors. All in all, this is a very good read, with some hot sex thrown in.

Bought this for the Meljean Brooks story, which is well worth it. Alyssa Day's world isn't my cuppa but may be yours; the other two were interesting, if not (to me) noteworthy.

Maggie Shayne's story was the best. The stories by Alyssa Day and Meljean Brook were a little too full of characters and start-up info but turned out to be good. I do not care for Marjorie M. Liu's Hunter Series, even though I love her Drake and Steele Series, and this story didn't sway me in anyway.

Four paranormal romance: I originally got it for Day's "Wild Hearts in Atlantis."
"Animal Magnetism" by Maggie Shayne: I've read a couple of Shayne's short stories before but they have never made enough of an impression on me to make me seek out more. This one was much better than the stuff I have read in the past. It's very simple, not flowery at all. It is predictable but it is also very sweet.
"Paradise" by Meljean Brook: I've been meaning to check her out and am very disappointed. I found the story boring and long-winded. It might be just her writing style that I dislike. I ended up giving up on the story.
"Hunter Kiss" by Marjorie Liu: Another person I've been meaning to check out. The writing style bothered me but the characters and the world she created was so intriguing that I had to keep reading. Liu is the opposite of Brook's style: choppy sentences but very stuffy English. I'm not sure how many people would that "I did not do..." instead of "I didn't do..." The story seems to be more of a background prequel to a long series featuring Maxine and Grant. Really interesting read.
"Wild Hearts in Atlantis" by Alyssa Day: This one features Bastien and Kat. I have to admit that Bastien wasn't that memorable as one of the Seven Warriors of Atlantis and it was a good choice to give him a short story instead of a novel. A good read. Typical Atlantis storyline for Day.
Overall very decent anthology. I liked 3 out of the 4 stories.

Very much enjoyed this book. I knew I would like Liu and Shayne. They are two authors I enjoy and it was great reading short stories which filled out the story lines on their other books. I also like reading anthologies to see if I can find new authors that I would be interested in. I was not disappointed. The stories by Brook and Day were both entertaining and hooked me. I will be reading more of their books in the future.

I got this book to read the intro to the Hunter Kiss series by M. Liu and ended up reading all of them. I've had a lot of books by these authors sitting around my house, and this was a good way to push those books to the top of my TBR.
Enjoyed all of the stories and will start looking in to actually reading some of the full length books.
Gave this anthology 4 stars. Happy Reading!

A paranormal romance anthology with four unconnected stories.
The first, "Animal Magnetism" by Maggie Shayne was a forgettable tale, with a minor paranormal twist, of a vet who can communicate with animals. Heavy on the sex and romance, pleasant but typical.
"Paradise" by Meljean Brook may be interesting to someone who is familiar with the series it is associated with, but I am not and found it completely confusing. Character motivations made no sense. I couldn't finish this one.
"Hunter Kiss" by Liu is a darker, harder edged story, prequel to The Iron Hunt. It is highly recommended if you are going to read this series which is less romance and more urban fantasy. This is the story of Grant and Maxine's meeting. Worth picking up this book for this story alone.
And lastly the Atlantis story from Day was surprisingly complete for a shorter story and a fun and interesting addition to her series.

I enjoyed three of the entries in this book immensely. The entry by Ms Liu was not up to her usual greatness. It was very dark almost to the very end. The entry by Ms Day was very good, 5 star material as far as I am concerned.
Overall, this is a good book.

Of course M Shayne, MM Liu stories were great with that twist of difference.
Day is Atlantis, Poseidon Warriors, and Brook is Vampire & Guardian Corps.
They have a ways to go, the stories were the usual. You read one you read them all.
Don't pass up the book it is still a good read.
