Foolproof Love:
3.5 *
Jules needs a boyfriend stat when her ex comes waltzing back to town. See, Grant dumped her because she wanted to stay in her small town and he wasn't (and I think he thought she was a little tame/boring too). He was her first love. Now Grant is back to work for/take over his daddy's business. Adam happens to be in town to help his mother who was just diagnosed with cancer. Adam happens to have a reputation as the town's "bad boy." He is also friends with Jules' cousin Daniel. There is also a 3rd friend, Quinn in the group of friends (there is underlying trauma d/t absent father and death of a friend in a car accident (John, John's sister Hope was also severly injured in that same crash).
Jules asks Adam to fake date her. What begins as fake dating and insta-lust blossoms into lovers. Both characters compliment the other and allow each to have moments where they shine. I loved that Jules owns a cat café. Her BFF Aubry is interesting as well (she is the next book; she's antisocial and has severe anxiety in crowds, she's a gamer. Not sure what she does for a job- she's always at the café or home.) I do wish Jules would have cared less what Grant thought and it takes her time to get to not caring.
Fool Me Once:
4*
Aubry is an antisocial web design by day, gamer by night. She is Jules' BFF from book 1. Aubry also has social anxiety around crowds and strangers. As a result her circle of friends is super small (Jules). She is also one of the best gamers in the world and qualifies to test/be the first to preview a new version of her favorite game at DeathCon. Quinn (Adam and Daniel's friend) is in need of a date to his sister's wedding. His parents are oil tycoons and want him to take over. Quinn doesn't want that life and likes being a cowboy and working with his hands. His parents throw women at him left and right and he thinks a date will prevent that. He offers to be Audrey's protector/bodyguard from the crowds and "clear a path" through them and in exchange she will be his date.
What starts as an enemies (they really haven't gotten along in the year they've really known each other; her BFF was dating, then engaged, then married his BFF Adam), turns into lovers. I thought Quinn was really good at talking Aubry down from her panic attacks. He didn't belittle or think less of her. Aubry was relatable as she also has a reason for why she does what she does. There is some angst, but is resolved quickly.
Hope is also introduced in this one. She was Daniel's girlfriend (I think) once upon a time. After a car accident that killed her brother and severely injured her, she left town to never come back. Her and Daniel's story is next.
A Fool for You
2*
Hope and Daniel has a history. They were high school sweethearts that didn't survive a car accident that killed Hope's brother and severely injured Hope. Daniel was driving and blamed himself and decided to remove himself from Hope's life. He was not there/present while she recovered. Fast forward 13 years later and Hope is back in town to set up a scholarship in her brother's (John) name.
This isn't a spoiler since it's in the book synopsis, but Hope ends up pregnant. I expected to like this more. I really didn't like Daniel. In the previous 2 books, I thought he was a sympathetic character; grieving the loss of a best friend and girlfriend. But then, you realize the loss of the girlfriend is by choice- his. I thought he turned into an Alpha-hole; dictating to Hope where she could live, what she should do etc. Very much "you've pregnant and it's my child so here is how things are gonna work." Hope's job, dreams, life? They don't matter anymore!
Even once they got back together, he blew a little hot and cold. Their reconciliation was too fast and not enough grovel after his behavior IMO. Hope's parents hit the nail on the head.
